District 5 – I am extremely concerned about the Byhalia Pipeline. Residents of South Memphis are already plagued by a cancer risk four times the national average, and 38109 has some of the worst asthma rates in Shelby County.
Since 2010, there have been 1,650 occurrences of oil leaking from pipelines in the United States, according to Dr. Douglass Cosler, a hydrogeologist working for Adaptive Groundwater Solutions. Combined, these leaks have amassed more than 11.5 million gallons of oil spilled.
In May 2016, Plains All American, the company given the permit to build the pipeline, was indicted by a grand jury in California on 46 counts, four of which were felony charges, in connection to a 140,000 gallon oil spill. This company has a reputation and history of contamination.
Everyone deserves clean water to drink, even poor black folks. Clean water is a basic human right. Where do you stand on this issue? What are you doing to help protect this part of our city?
